DEER thermal drone recovery

ethical recovery matters.

After the shot, a wounded deer may travel into thick cover, across property lines, or into marshland. As hunters, it is our responsibility to everything in our power to recover that animal until it is found, or shown to be a non-fatal shot. Thermal imaging significantly increases recovery success, especially within the first critical hours.

Our thermal drone system allows us to cover large areas quickly — detecting body heat even in wooded areas, tall grass and low-light conditions. Let our thermal drone do the searching for you, saving you unnecessary time and disturbance to your hunting area.

What to expect:

  • Rapid response (when available).

  • Aerial thermal grid search.

  • Real-time monitoring on a large second screen so you see what we see.

  • Coordinated ground guidance if needed.

When to Call:

How long after the shot should I wait before calling?

In most cases, we recommend waiting 30 minutes before ground pursuit of your deer (depending on shot placement). If you made a good shot, your deer will usually be found within 100 yards!

Call immediately if:

  • You don’t see or hear your deer go down.

  • Your deer is not found within the first 100 yards of trailing.

  • If you know the shot was bad - quietly back out and call immediately!

  • Poor weather is coming and you need to recover your deer quickly.

  • When in doubt, back out and call us. Success rates are much higher for deer that have not been pushed.

Early deployment significantly increases success.

Pricing & Deployment Fees:

At Chesapeake Thermal Drone Recovery, we believe in transparent, straightforward pricing. Every search is different, but our goal is simple: deploy quickly, search efficiently, and give you clear expectations before we arrive. Because time and weather matter in thermal recovery, we encourage calling as soon as possible.

$250 for the first hour once on site and $100 for each additional hour. For jobs outside a 25 mile area - add $0.73/mile) round trip. There is no additional fee for recovered animals. Tipping for exceptional service is appreciated, but NOT required.

Important Expectations:

Chesapeake Thermal Drone Recovery will arrive promptly, we will give you an ETA of our arrival as soon as we get in the truck and head your way. Once on site, we’ll meet with the hunter and learn what happened and what actions have been taken so far. Did the shot look good? Was there a good blood trail? If a bowhunter, were you able to recover the arrow? After our discussion, we will conduct a thermal sweep of the shot location and surrounding area. Thermal targets will be checked closely and confirmed with aerial spot light. Once the deer is found, we will coordinate with the hunter for recovery.

What if the deer is found alive?

As of July 1, 2025, Maryland law allows a hunter who wounds a deer during legal shooting hours to pursue and kill that deer after legal shooting hours have ended. However, several restrictions must be followed and the Natural Resources Police must be notified via their 24-Hour Emergency telephone number. See COMAR 08.03.04.25 “Killing Wounded Deer After Legal Shooting Hours” for more info.

Can you find a deer that crossed property lines?

Thermal cameras can detect heat signatures beyond property lines and no one owns the sky above private property. BUT if an animal is found on a neighboring property, permission from the landowner is required before physical recovery and is the sole responsibility of the hunter. We assist ethically and legally at all times.

Success depends on:

  • Time since disappearance - the sooner we begin our search, the better!

  • Weather conditions - thermal conditions are best at night and cloudy days. We MAY be able to fly in light rain.

  • Terrain (open fields vs dense forest). Steep hills and pine woods take more time to search.

  • Size of the animal. Larger animals produce larger heat signatures.

  • Whether the animal is still alive and mobile.

  • Time since animal has passed. Deceased animals can retain body hear for many hours.

Does thermal work on gut-shot deer?

Yes — especially within the first several hours. If you know your shot was bad - back out as quietly as you can. Many times the animal will bed down close to where it was shot and stay nearby if not disturbed. Call us immediately! As body temperature drops over time, detection becomes more difficult. Quick deployment matters!

Do you guarantee recovery?

No search method can guarantee results.

We significantly increase the probability of locating an animal — especially at night and in thick cover — but success depends on many environmental factors beyond our control. We will always give an honest assessment before launching and do our best to find your deer. We hunt too, we understand.
